Fasting Serum Gastrin 17(G17) and Gastrin 34(G34) Levels in Patients with Peptic Ulcer

Abstract
In gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer and chronic superficial gastritis subjects, the two main forms of gastrin, gastrin 17 (G17) and gastrin 34 (G34), were estimated by radioimmunoassay in fasting serum.
Fasting serum G17 and G34 levels were measured from 16 patients with gastric ulcer, 17 patients with duodenal ulcer and as control 19 patients with chronic superficial gastritis.
Patients with peptic ulcer disease were found to have serum mean fasting G17 levels elevated when compared with control group.
The mean fasting serum G17 levels for the control group was 57.76¡¾19.28 pg/ml.
The mean serum G17 levels for the patients with gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer were 74.46¡¾36. 13 pg/ml (p<0.001) and 68.96¡¾22.27 pg/ml (p<0.01).
Fasting serum G34 in control and gastric ulcer subjects was similar.
It is concluded that G17 and pathogenesis of peptic ulcer (eg. acid secretion) was probably correlated and further study of postprandial gastrin response was needed.
